DESCRIPTION:\nDERRICK BARRY performs at Faces NV on Saturday May 18th!\nGet your tickets now via Eventbrite or at the door. \n \n“Derrick Barry is a Britney Spears impersonator\, actor\, RuPaul’s Drag Race star and a newly unintentional comedy queen who’s fan base is quickly growing – and rightly so. \nAs well as finishing fifth on Drag Race\, Derrick has also appeared in music videos\, competed on America’s Got Talent and toured the globe\, so she’s always had the drive to be a successful artist\, but is also still surprised that a decade on she’s done so much. \nAfter being hired to perform as Britney Spears across America\, Derrick booked her first gig this side of the Atlantic in Rome back in 2009\, which she ‘couldn’t believe’. \n“I realised I could do anything I wanted to do and be celebrated for it and that’s what I wanted out of the show” \nShe explains: “I’ve just updated my passport and I thought ‘wow 10 years and all these places I’ve been’\, I’m extremely grateful that these shows have given me opportunities unlike anything else. \n“I always dreamt of meeting Mariah Carey and I did! I got to perform with Madonna and be in a Katy Perry music video. Y’know when I was young I majored in theatre but I never thought I’d be doing it through drag.” \nBut since Drag Race Derrick has become a TV personality of their own that audiences want to meet and see perform as well as her Britney. \nDerrick explains the change that happened after season eight of the show aired: “Since Drag Race I still have bookings and they want Britney\, the only difference now is the meet and greet\, because before it was all about Britney but after Drag Race it started to shift. \n“I had people that were my fans and who wore my outfits from the show and that was really fun. \n“I started to feel that people know my name now\, but before I was just Britney. I realised I could do anything I wanted to do and be celebrated for it and that’s what I wanted out of the show – to add to what I already had.” \nAfter achieving all these career milestones across the past decade there’s even more things the performer is looking to add to their resume. \nDerrick says there’s plenty more she wants to do in the future\, explaining: “There’s more happening now that is celebrating drag\, I want to crossover into the mainstream and be able to be the first at doing something. \n“I’m really hoping for more TV and movie roles\, I want to play a part where I’m a man by day and a drag queen by night. \n“I want something bigger like Shangela and Willam\, that was such a dream role – I actually auditioned for Willam’s part – but I’m so glad he got it it’s something he always wanted. \n“There’s so many opportunities that have opened up for me and others.” \nHe notes Courtney Act’s recent achievements as someone to aspire to: “I love her she’s so talented and really created something for herself. She’s not just a singer or just a Drag Race contestant\, she’s shown people that she’s all those things and more.” \nAfter watching season eight of Drag Race many viewers wouldn’t have said that Derrick is a ‘comedy queen’\, instead she was still pinned as a Britney impersonator\, even after audiences got to know her during her time on the show. \nBut over the past year the tide has been changing\, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by Derrick. \nDerrick’s appearance at the Hater’s Roast alongside the likes of Eureka\, Latrice\, Trinity the Tuck and Trixie Mattel has garnered a huge reaction from fans of Drag Race. \nThe 11-minute ‘one night only’ performance was perhaps unintentionally funny but has since gained 600\,000 views on YouTube and comments including\, ‘her whole set sounds like someone reading a text completely made up of autocomplete. Brilliant.’ and ‘how do I get a tattoo of an 11 minute video’. \nOn the reaction from fans\, Derrick says: “It’s validation for sure but it’s how I’ve always been. \n“It might be my fault that that’s how the story went on the show [Drag Race] because it’s hard to be as funny as Bob that’s what he does! \n“I went into my shell there\, but the good thing is when I’m out on my own it just happens and I don’t mean it to I never thought they would be funny \n“So I felt a shift on things like Reddit – I don’t read it but I’ve been told – I just feel really good that people are getting to know me.” \n“I don’t have to be Britney to feel confident\, I can be me and this is allowing more fans to embrace me.” \nAs well the Hater’s Roast\, Derrick has had a few other viral moments including her ‘nobody was killed’ comment during a table talk for Billboard and appearance on web series “Wait\, What” with Kimora Black\, which Derrick tells us is currently filming its second series. \nDerrick adds: “I don’t have to be Britney to feel confident\, I can be me and this is allowing more fans to embrace me. \n“People are even considering me for All Stars which is so ‘wow’\, during season eight I don’t think people gave me enough credit for doing something outside my box – you know it’s not very Britney to eat a baby!” \nBut Derrick’s favourite thing about performing?
